I export my address book from godaddy hosted e-mail to a csv file. The csv file opens correction in excel. I go to TB, open the address book - tools - import, choose addresses, choose csv file In the pop-up window, I switch to search for csv and find my file and select it. I set up the correct column names (or as close as I can) and uncheck the unused ones. I try to import - it says there's an error and not all contacts have been imported. In actuality, NONE have been imported - I have a new empty address book. NB: Some of the addresses are in Russian, they're actually incorrectly rendered in excel. I might try changing the encoding in excel and re-saving ...but why would that stop TB from importing them as-is? Or from importing ANY of them, for that matter, including those in English?

I has someone report, today actually, that they had needed to set the encoding to UTF-8 to get the import to work. Their spreadsheet apparently used something else. Once that was done, no issues.

As an aside, Do an address book export from Thunderbird as CSV format.

Using that as a guide change the column titles in the spreadsheet to match, both in names and order. It is much easier than poking around in that horrible little selector the import offers. I discuss using libre office spread sheet on CSV files here. If it is any help.

Thanks much! Unfortunately, not solved quite yet. I figured out how to change encoding, but it's one of those situations where I can see that NO available encoding properly displays the original cyrillic , it's always gobbledygook. I reordered the columns in excel, used UTF-8 and exported it as .csv, but it still doesn't import. What do you think?

I think that unless it is a national secret or all your mistresses email addresses you might send me the file and I can have a look at it.

HI,

Thanks very much! I hope it's safe to send to you???!!

I know you provided an e-mail address but can I just attach it on here? And is excel file o.k.

I am working on cleaning it up and found it easier in excel than CSV.
