Ok, enter "about:config" in the URL bar, accept the warning message and do the following steps: 1) search "browser.search.openintab" and double clik on the result to change the value from "false" to "true" 2) search "browser.link.open_newwindow", select the 1st line and change the value from 3 (basically) to 1. 3) restart your browser Now, you should always open new tabs after clicking on a link or a search ;) For clicks on bookmarks, I am not sure there is a solution

If you use the search field in the upper right of Firefox, you can use the buttons Alt+Enter of your keyboard when you entered your research.
Thanks, I see! so you enter some text in the search box but, before clicking the right arrow, you click alt+enter. yes that works, BUT.. 1. if you enter a whole name (e.g., wikipedia) Firefox automatically replaces your tab, and 2. if you choose a bookmark, firefox automatically replaces your tab. Are there ways to make Firefox open a new tab under all conditions?

Hi, I'm not familiar with Mac but in Windows, hold down Ctrl (Cmd in Mac?) while clicking on arrow.
Open Bookmarks in New Tab add-on works well in Windows - Mac not sure.
A couple more add-ons to look at that might be of interest -

browser.link.open_newwindow needs to be 3 to open link in a new tab. The value of 1 means to open links in the current tab.
Actually the option "browser.link.open_newwindow" worked in previous versions of Firefox, but not anymore, whatever the value (I tried 0, 1, 2 and 3, there is no difference...). As Scribe wrote, the best way is certainly to look for add-ons. The problem is already known. If you want more details, have a look at that.
You did set browser.search.openintab to true?
That should work for the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar.
