'Save Image As' keeps changing directories

more options

'Save Image As' keeps changing the location it's saving the file. As I'm going through various pages and saving certain images, I notice that sometimes it saves where I'm expecting it to, (the location I most recently selected while saving an image), but very often, in the same session (meaning I haven't closed and restarted FF), it decides to change the location to a directory I've used earlier, instead of where it just saved the previous file.

I thought it might be a scenario something like, I open tabs 1 - 5, save images to location A. Then I save a file to location B, open up pages 6 - 10, save a file to location A again. At this point I expect that my files will default to location A, but maybe pages 6 - 10 now have location B associated with them and they will default there instead. I just tested that and that's not it.

It's also not extension (ie .jpg, .gif) that forces the change of location. I can't figure out what triggers it.

Does anyone know if there is another about:config setting that we can change, (which the next FF upgrade in 5 minutes will undoubtedly override) to restore proper behavior?

This behavior started with the upgrade to FF 7.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.

If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access the about:config page.
You can create a new Boolean pref via the right-click context menu with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.

  • Use the Search (Filter) bar at the top of the about:config page to locate preferences more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
  • Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean) or by double-clicking the line with the pref

Cyberninja, /!\
Removed firefox completely (as in removing every single trace of it) .... regedit ....
with all due respect your solution may not be the best advice.

Maybe you should warn users attempting your solution that they risk

  • inadvertently damaging the registry which could cause all sorts of problems,
  • destroying important information like stored bookmarks, passwords and logins etc.

(Also I am not sure why you suggest users install Beta 12 in relation to this problem? )

well i suggest beta because it solved my problem while no other version did

as about playing with registry, yes people should be warned and i'll edit my post now

@Cyberninja,

I started this thread, but I did not chose the "Solution Chosen". I'm also not going to deselect it this time. It does work. There are about 12 things going on in this thread, but the reason I'm against the solution being published as the solution, is because I do not believe v11 is stable.

However unstable 11 is, beta version 12 has the potential to be even more unstable than 11. By definition, beta is not ready for prime-time. If all you're trying to solve is the file save location issue, your best choices are to stick with the older versions (ie 6.02, and yes, heed all of the warnings about it being unsafe [FF's fault for abandoning it], but at least it was stable) or v11 with the config update as detailed in cor-el's post and hope they get it stabilized very quickly. (The latter isn't likely given the 'rapid development' process).

Also, as much as I disagree with John99 and sometimes how he does what he does, this is the proper fix from FF. I just personally think the fix is wraped up in a very unstable package, but, like the issue that started this thread, the onus is once again on us, the user to demonstrate that it's unstable, and until we do, we're simply not going to be believed.

John99 is not the person who chose the solution, nor closed the thread.

It may be helpful to start fresh threads about some of these things, it is easiest to troubleshoot, resolve and find solutions for threads with single issues that closley match the title and have the users system information. Whilst a thread is open it is easy to add cross links to new threads (or at least mention you have opened a new thread ).

Workarounds for this problem are mentioned in my post (above)here and my comments on instability are in a related thread

well sorry i jumped a little too early

my solution seems to have reduced the severity of the problem but it remains still and its lesser in occurence now but still there

i just hope mozilla put it somewhere in the options next time where you can chose for a tab/site to remember last download location or use a global setting
