I have an email account with spectrum/charter ISP. the spectrum webmail works. I wanted to use thunderbird as my primary email client. I can receive email with thunderbird but not send.

got this info from spectrum support online chat session -Spectrum no longer supports any third party email client such as Thunderbird, outlook...etc. Spectrum only supports our webmail service at webmail.spectrum.net

Does that mean that it won't work with thunderbird or outlook ?

per the support instructions, here is the info requested along with screenshots of SMTP settings and error message mail provider - spectrum/charter ISP - spectrum/charter malwarebytes firewall control anitivirus - malwarebytes 4.1.0 windows 8.1 thunderbird 68.9.0

I'd greatly appreciate any help. Looked other posting and tried changing port numbers but now getting a timed out message. changed IMAP port to 143 from default 993 and SMTP to 587.

Port 993 is the incoming port for secure (SSL) IMAP servers, so it definitely won't work for the outgoing. Try setting the port to 587, with Connection security = None, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely and User name = email address.

Hi sfhowes,

I had changed the settings a lot and put in the 993 in by mistake. Should have looked at it before posting. I tried your recommendations and getting the "timed out" message.

I tried the settings from the spectrum support site and still get the "timed out" message.

   • Username: Your full Spectrum email address
   • Password: Your Spectrum email password
   • SSL: On
   • Protocol: IMAP
   • Port: 993
   • Port: 587
   • Requires Authentication: Yes, or checked

I can receive incoming mail. server name - mail.twc.com user name - email address port: 993 connection security - SSL/TLS authenication - normal password

I reset the password by going into options and deleted the saved password and restarted TB.

Still won’t send. “timed out message”.

Any other ideas ?

Timeouts can be caused antivirus scanning outgoing mail. It's always recommended to exclude the TB profile folder from AV scans or disable scanning of outgoing mail and secure connections.

Make sure you're using the correct Spectrum server based on your domain (see Spectrum link above). Some users have mobile.charter.net on port 587, SSL/TLS security (not STARTTLS, the usual setting for this port), authentication = normal password, User Name = email address.

My email server defaults to mail.twc.com and getting incoming email with mail.twc.com. to rule out security software and firewall turned them off when sending test email to another of my twc.com email accounts.

on spectrum forum, an TB user had settings - 587, user name - email address, authenication - none, security - STARTTLS. tried those settings. same error message. did fresh install of TB, reset password, disable add-ons, ran it in safe mode. using windows 8.1 computer.

mobile.charter.net doesn't recognize login password.

any other suggestions?
