Firefox 38.0 on Linux can only download one file correctly. After one success, it hangs on succeeding one. What's wrong?

I recently upgraded to Firefox 38.0 running on Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.11. Except for the first time with no .mozilla directory in my home directory, Firefox stores the downloaded file in /tmp, but then it never moves it to its final location, and the Download monitor reports that the download is in progress.

With no .mozilla directory in my home directory, I can do one download correctly, but after that, it shows the same symptoms. Thus, this problem has nothing to do with my local setup for Firefox because it happens with the initial setting (albeit after one download).

Any suggestions?

BTW, I'm typing this questions on a Windows system -- all configuration information generated on this support web page is irrelevant.
