Already tried enabling less safe apps, not using 2 step verification(so app specific password is not required i guess), used unblock captcha. I am completely clueless. PLEASE HELP!!

You've (obviously) verified you can log into Gmail using the native web interface?

Is this a Google Apps for Work Gmail account, or a free Gmail account?

When was your Gmail account created?

Are you attempting to connect to your Gmail account using IMAP, and if so have you enabled IMAP accesss in the Gmail preferences?

Finallly, are you using the Thunderbird new account setup wizard?

There's a lot of conflicting information out there regarding what works and what doesn't, so I'm curious to get to the bottom of this, but be prepared for a few questions back and forth.

Cheers, Dave

If the wizard is not reporting settings found the most likely issue is anti virus / firewall issues. Nortons particularly has issues with version numbers and Thunderbird in general. I am really starting to wonder is it is because it is not a Microsoft product.
