Can I have Firefox open in Metro form from the Metro screen, and desktop form from the desktop?

I am running Windows 8.1 on a touchscreen device (Surface Pro 2), so I use both the Metro & desktop screens. I've been waiting for the Firefox Metro version while subsisting with IE for the last few months, and now Firefox Metro has been cancelled.

Currently, whenever I open Firefox, it sends the computer to the desktop which is jarring if you're Metro-ing. Now, I've discovered the way to switch between the desktop & the Metro version of Firefox when you are already IN Firefox, but that seems very much the wrong way round. I don't want to change interfaces through a programme/app, I want the programme/app to open in whatever interface I'm using at the time.
So, is there a way that if I double click on the desktop icon, Firefox in desktop mode opens, but if I'm on the Metro interface & tap the Firefox app it will open in Metro mode?

Hey,

Unfortunately, as you said in your post, Firefox Metro has been cancelled.

Sorry!

Thanks for your reply. Understood, but why then can I still switch to 'Windows 8 Touch' mode which takes me to the Metro interface and changes Firefox to a Metro-like look? Is this not Firefox Metro by any other name, just a version that only allows you to switch between formats through a dropdown? Seems a bit weird...

Thanks for your rapid and helpful reply. Makes me want to stay with Firefox all the more. However, I don't think a screenshot would help, so let me try to explain it in another way.

Firefox can appear in two 'skins' - desktop & windows 8 touchscreen. You can change from one two the other by the menu option top-right of the window in desktop version and bottom-right in the Metro version.
Similarly, Windows 8.1 has two 'skins' - desktop & Metro. When Firefox is set to desktop skin, it will open in the Windows desktop whatever app/icon I press, moving from the Metro interface if I touched that icon. When it is in Metro mode, it does the same i.e. if I'm on the desktop and double-click the icon it takes me to the Metro interface and opens in its Metro skin.
If I could open it while on the Metro interface to the Metro skin, and from the desktop to the desktop skin, I would be so happy. Hope this makes it clearer.
Also, I will include a pic of Firefox in Windows 8 touchscreen mode, with the option to go back to the desktop version, and vice versa. Maybe it'll help...
