since updating thunderbird I have been unable to access my hotmail,it is not 2 step verification
when I try to log onto thunderbird to access my hotmail I get the message "sending of password for user ----- did not succeed.Mail server POP- mail,outlook .com responded: authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password". this has only occurred since I applied an update to thunderbird. I have checked the 2 step verification but it does not appear to be activated and as I am not very computer literate I am at a loss.

Outlook.com seems to have withdrawn POP support. Try setting your account up again but using IMAP instead.
You don't need to delete the old POP-connected account - but when you have the new version up and running, you might want to move old messages from the old account to the new and then delete the redundant older account.
