Yes, I have plugin-container.exe load too when I run my Gmail Manager add-on. Is this OK? Is this a problem?

Firefox 3.6.4 introduced this plugin-container.exe to make sure that plugins are better behaved. So if you're watching a video or playing a game and it crashes because of a faulty Flash plugin, only the plugin will crash and it wouldn't take down all of Firefox.

Go to the following link, click on "What's New in Firefox 3.6.4". The first 2 paragraphs is a brief explanation of what plugin-container.exe is designed to do. Right now, in Windows and Linux only, it isolates Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins from the main browser, so that if one of those plug-ins crashes, your whole browser does not crash. This was done due to the large number of crashes caused by plug-ins. Plans are to add more plug-ins in later updates to Firefox.

https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.4/releasenotes/

My only wish is that plugin-container.exe had been designed to close itself when pages running the plug-ins are closed. Maybe that will happen in a future update too.

I hope there's a way to disable this feature. or yes, at least that the file closes itself automatically after it has served its purpose.

This is ridiculous. I'm not usually upset about FF updates, but this latest one is a disgrace. I expect more from Mozilla. I hate seeing random EXE files opening on my computer.

Everything I've found about this plugin container is in a thread about crashing. How do I get rid of this thing?

It seems that as soon as this was downloaded, all my games seem to run real slow and/or freeze. what would happen if I stopped the process of it?

This is a "solution" for Mozilla:

WHENEVER you've updated the browser to include a function that must run as an individual executable file (.exe), YOU MUST INCLUDE A FIREFOX POP-UP BOX TELLING USERS THAT A SECONDARY EXECUTABLE FILE CALLED ''''''''''''''''_ WILL BE RUNNING ALONGSIDE FIREFOX, GIVE A BRIEF, SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF WHAT THE FILE IS FOR, MENTION THAT IT WILL SHOW IN THE TASK MANAGER, AND PROVIDE A URL LINK TO MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SECONDARY EXECUTABLE FILE.__

That way, millions of people don't panic and think they have a virus and go berserk trying to isolate and delete what they think is a virus, and potentially do irreparable harm to their computers.

As someone that doesnt use a ton of plug ins, although i get the reasoning behind it, it does very little for me but gobble resources like a rabid dog. Firefox is chewing up about double that of the pre update version, and this container thing nearly half as much. Or in other words about the same amount as the entire firefox used to use in its former state. And to that the fact it refused to restart after update (no, no clues, i just refuse to work) and only after spotting this new "feature" in task manager, along with IE and google did i figure out what was going on.

If this auto update today has rolled out across the globe, i wonder how many users are now also stuck with their browser not working. Everywhere i've looked in the last few hours seems, as someone already said, to be about crashes and there is plenty of them (2.28million acccording to google)

And why is it so damn sloooow now? As a simple browser that is, not flash or java bound sites, just plain old google search, it drags.

A word to the wise...fix it fast, chrome looks a good alternative to many.

I'm off to find the old firefox to download, or failing that i'll have a squint at the new opera. When the page eventually loads of course.

267000k for the two is way too much memry

Unbekannt "Everywhere i've looked in the last few hours seems, as someone already said, to be about crashes and there is plenty of them (2.28million acccording to google)"

And did you limit that Google search to the last 24 hours (on the Advanced Search page) or use the "All time" defualt?

Every one's set-up is different. I updated without a problem and things are running fine. Over many years, I have experienced few problems with Firefox, and Netscape prior to that. I keep a clean system, don't load up on crapware, no extra toolbars, and only the add-ons that I need and use!

Many of those with memory usage problems have something else on their system or running within one of their tabs causing the high memory usage - GUARANTEED!!

If you people would ask individual questions, stating your exact issue/problem and list all of your add-ons, instead of posting in a "complaint thread", you might get an answer to your specific problem.

Possible way to disable in about:config

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1929497

Advise to backup prefs.js in your profile folder first, just in case.

If your browser crashes when a plug-in crashes, oh well, you caused it.

Here is an idea.. Get rid of it or I'm going to a different browser!! Heck I may go back to IE..

Hello,

I'm having a lot of trouble opening sites such as the New York Times and Salon. I think the adds are making it crash. Also, I'm getting messages that indicate that the "plugin-container.exe" is failing.

Thanks, Jeff

This is one of the worst things I've seen come from Firefox. I switched to it from IE because IE runs extremely slow for flash. Sadly, with this update, IE runs a million times faster for flash. On top of my flash itself running slow, plugin-container runs at 100% of my CPU. Unacceptable.

this will not fly, I am changing to google chrome NOW

To the person who said this:

Many of those with memory usage problems have something else on their system or running within one of their tabs causing the high memory usage - GUARANTEED!!

THE TASK MANAGER SHOWS YOU HOW MUCH MEMORY AND CPU FIREFOX IS USING.

PEOPLE EXPERIENCING FIREFOX PROBLEMS OPEN UP THEIR TASK MANAGER TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH MEMORY FIREFOX IS USING.

THAT NUMBER IS ATTACHED TO FIREFOX AND FIREFOX ALONE, NOT ANY OTHER PROGRAMME

I hope I made myself clear

Don't you think it's silly to make an executable that runs whenever you visit a site with flash and demands internet access AND NOT TELL ANYTHING ABOUT IT? And that name... plugin-container.exe? Seriously? I opened a page and my FW informed me that a plugin-container.exe tries to access the internet - my first thought was obviously "virus", so I blocked it, wanted to stop it, kill it, delete it, destroy or whatever, and then I discovered that it's from ... Firefox ! Good job guys, you made a stupidest move I ever saw in today's world when wherever you move you can get a virus. I wonder how many ppl thought it was a virus...

I got rid of my Trend Micro and that seems to be doing the trick.

My plugin-container.exe connects to IP 85.183.195.26 Port 80 !? Does it send or request data? Why does it send or request and what?

YouTube videos forces plugin-container.exe to use 50-70% of my CPU (2,8 GHz Pentium IV) (Only one Tab is open, with only one YouTube video)

This plugincontainer.exe has crashed my gaming online since the update. I cannot access any flash games at all now due to this program taking up more than HALF of my 4gig ram. It is horrible and I plan to try the about: config to eliminate or disable it in hopes of being able to use the internet again!

What a STUPID move for Mozilla!
