Opening pdfs in Adobe Reader (XI and now DC) and printing from there works as expected but defeats the purpose and snappyness of having the plugin...

I am not sure what version of Acrobat Reader that is installed but it sounds like this issue recently that had a patch. https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-wont-print-reader-10.html

Please make sure all of the addons/extensions are up to date first.
