deleted most of snap.do but opening page says it can't find file for the ads
Foolishly and unsuspectingly downloaded malware snap.do. Eliminated it in programs and features. Ads still appeared on opening page with captive search engine. Deleted a hidden file and search engine option is back. snap.do, however, still controls first page. Prompt says 'file can't be found'. I keep choosing blank page in Firefox but residual snap.do file somewhere still controls the page. Thanks for your help, anyone.

Have you tried a complete scan of your system through any malware scanner like Malware Scanner or Adw Cleaner. Also go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries from there . Also go to windows control panel's and search all toolbars or potentially unwanted software and do a clean uninstall from softwares like Revo Uninstallar .
Remove a toolbar that has taken over afterwards install the search reset addon - it will revert the most common customizations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

After the above is fixed,
Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
