Password manager is set to remember passwords (options/security, box checked) but no longer prompts for new passwords. Some user/password information has been deleted from password list, but not by me.

I have 2 gmail accounts and FF normally presents a choice of usernames when I try to log in. Last night I clicked on the wrong one by mistake. I deleted the username from the signin box, clicked again and selected the right account. Later when I tried to login to the other account, the username was not offered and it has in fact been deleted from the password list in password manager. Not a big problem, but FF has now stopped asking me if I want to remember passwords. Box is checked in options/security, restarts of program and OS make no difference.

Hello.

This problem has been reported multiple times and it seems it's been around for a while. I've given support on it but not user has gotten back to me to tell me what worked in the end, if anything at all.

So my suggestions are:

  1. clear the cache (I believe this will work for some users)
  2. If that fails, reinstall Firefox. You can get it for free, as always, at getfirefox.com. Just install it over your current install.

And please report back the results.

Many thanks for the advice. I cleared the cache and FF is now prompting to remember passwords again. However, the process deleted all my passwords and I will have to enter them all again. This is no biggie, as there weren't many stored (it's a fairly new netbook). However, I have entered some incorrectly and wanted to delete them to save them being offered every time. When I look in the saved password list, it's empty. I know for a fact that I have entered three, and these are coming up when I try to log in anywhere, so they are in the system somewhere. So it's working, but not perfectly. I will end my session, reinstall FF and get back to you. Thanks for your time on this - much appreciated.

Right - now sorted. I uninstalled and reinstalled FF, with a full restart between each stage. Not only is FF behaving normally by prompting to save passwords, but all my lost passwords have come back. The password list now has all my passwords saved. Passwords I put in before the reinstall have not been saved, so FF was clearly not fully functional after the cache clearout.

So the feedback is that a full reinstall (saving all previous user info for the fresh install) is the final answer. Clearing the cache may solve the problem superficially, but may not be the complete answer.

Morbus, thank you for your time and assistance. It is much appreciated.

You can check in the Password Manager to see if there is an entry with an empty name.
Be careful with deleting a name if it has been filled by the password manager.
Safest is to reload the page.

I used your clear cache procedure and it worked first time. Thanks for your help.
