My default setting for language is English-GB. On one forum I use frequently the spell checker repeatedly reverts to American English, as shown on the right-click sub-menu under Languages. I hope that by removing the American option this annoyance will stop, but how can it be done? I can find no reference to English-US is about:config or anywhere else.

Thanks!

Thanks cor-el. Found en-US.aff and en-US.dic and deleted both, which seems to have done the trick. The US option no longer shows up on the sub-menu. Thanks for saving my sanity!

Try this:

  1. Type "about:addons" into the address bar.
  2. Select the "Dictionaries" section on the left.
  3. Hit "Remove" next to the dictionaries you no longer require.

Scott,

Unfortunately I haven't got a "Dictionaries section on the left" (v.35.0.1). I have only: Get add-ons Extensions Appearance Plug-ins Services

The only dictionary in the Extensions list is the British English dictionary that I want. I suspect the American dictionary was/is integral with the browser itself.

Only English-UK is listed in Settings > Content > Languages.

Thanks for your help,

Richard

The default dictionaries that are part of the Firefox installation are in the dictionaries folder in the Firefox program folder.
