Can I get rid of the battery-like icon in the locbar?
With a few websites a gray icon that looks like a car battery appears at the left end of my locbar, followed by the "more than" sign (>). I'm told that this means that an element on the page uses a plug-in—although I can't find any pertinent documentation. If what I'm told is correct, I can't see any use for this icon. My questions are:
1. Of what use is this icon? and
2. Is there any way of getting rid of it?

The means that the page you are using uses a plugin. Plugins can be used for legitimate purposes, but they are often used to attack computers as well. That icons allows you to see when a page is using plugins, and block or allow them as you see fit. You can read more about this at Use plugins to play audio, video, games and more and Why do I have to click to activate plugins?

Thanks, Tyler, but perhaps I should fill you in on a couple of things.
1. My browser is completely updated. I use ESR ver. 24.7.0. This is the current ESR version.
2. I use the NoScript extension, which blocks plugins. (I can enable a blocked plugin easily if I need it.)
You answered my question #1 (although I would like to see some documentation) but I'm still hoping for answer to my question #2.
Ah you didn't give us the troubleshooting information so I couldn't see if you were ESR or not.
I believe the Plugin logo will still appear even if you are using No-Script. If you want to get rid of it, there may be an extension, or a way to edit the CSS, but I'm not certain.
I don't recall bypassing a request for troubleshooting information. Can you direct me to that section?
And while you're at it, can you tell me when a reply would include checking the box, "Needs more information" (which I considered checking now but decided against, as I'm not sure what it's for).
Usually, the Troubleshooter add-on in Firefox (built-in I believe) will try to grab your troubleshooting information. It's a green button that shows before you post your question. I'm not sure how the Ask a Question process works anymore since it's been re-worked previously but I'm sure Tyler would know more.
Checking the box "Needs more information" basically is asking the OP or anybody else for more information. For example, I can click the "Needs more info" and it'll add a 'tag' for needing more info. Once the info requested has been provided, you can clear it by clicking the checkbox again. It'll say something different. (I think it says "I'm providing the requested information.)
You can copy/paste the Troubleshooting Information manually by following the directions below:
- Navigate to
about:support
via Address Bar - Click the button that says
Copy text to clipboard
- Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
