Since "upgrading" to the new Firefox this morning the Gmail and Twitter tabs on my bookmarks don't respond at all. I can't even open Gmail from the Google home page. Why is this happening?

Hi therealgary17, I don't have a problem going to Gmail using this bookmarked link: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox

Have you tried clearing cookies & site data for Gmail: Clear cookies and site data in Firefox https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/clear-cookies-and-site-data-firefox

more options

Had already tried clearing cache and cookies but that didn't work. Just tried the link you posted and it goes to a 404 "The requested URL/mail/u/0/ was not found on this server."

more options

Tried it again clicking directly on the link you posted and absolutely NOTHING happens! (For the previous attempt that led to the 404 I retyped the link into my browser window in a new tab.) This is absolutely ridiculous!

There was some sort of glitch with Gmail this morning because I started getting Forum responses in my Spam folder instead of my inbox, so, I'm not certain that it's completely on your end.

Try this link: http://mail.google.com/mail

Have you tried another browser?

It works fine in Chrome. And the problem is also with Twitter, and both started right after I "upgraded" to the new version, so I'm pretty sure it's a Firefox issue.

more options

C'mon, It can't be a Firefox issue if it's working for me.

Try Firefox in it's Safe Mode: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#firefox:win7:fx74

more options

Do links to specific Twitter users work? For example:

https://twitter.com/mozilla

If you haven't already, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, Enhanced Tracking Protection, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Tried safe mode --still no response. This is insane.

There are two possibilities in such cases:

(1) Problem setting or corrupted file in your profiles (2) Problem/corrupted file in the Firefox program folder

So the usual next steps for diagnostics are either of these (in any order):

(1) New Profile test (2) Clean Reinstall

Details:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem site(s).

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Feb2020, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Do the problem site(s) work any better in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Feb2020 will remain available for future testing.)

Note: if this test changed your default profile, use the Set as Default Profile button for your regular profile to set it back to normal.

Clean Re-install

This takes about 5 minutes. It's not about your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

If you want to make a backup first just in case, see: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

If you have Microsoft Office installed locally, please change your default browser to Internet Explorer temporarily before the next step.

(C) Using File Explorer (hold down the Windows key and press E to launch it), right-click > rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement at your next startup?

My Firefox "updated" about 3 weeks ago and I've had constant problems with Twitter ever since then on my computer.

The weird thing is, it usually works in the morning and then around noon pst time Twitter stops working. I'll close it and the the site won't even come up at all.

Odd how it works in the morning and then stops around the same time every day.

What's up?

Hi LaffyinVegas, does Twitter start working again in the afternoon if you

(A) Do a normal exit and restart of Firefox, or

(B) Do a normal shut down and restart your system

Or is it out for the rest of the day? Can you still use Twitter during that time in a different browser?

more options

Hi therealgary17, there were other threads pointing to a storage problem for some Firefox 74 upgraders. If you still have issues at this point, let me know.

more options

Sometimes when I restart my computer it will work and sometimes it won't. Today, it still doesn't work after I restarted my computer.

Twitter still works on Chrome. I have two different accounts and use them on different browsers.

Hi LaffyinVegas, could you try clearing cookies and site data for Twitter. This will log you out -- that probably is the least of your concerns at the moment. Here's how:

Open the Options/Preferences page using either:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click Privacy & Security

On the right side, scroll down to the Cookies and Site Data section

Click the Manage Data... button to open the "Manage Cookies and Site Data" dialog.

In the dialog's search box, type twit to filter the list. Select the domain(s) and click the Remove Selected button. Then click the Save Changes button at the lower right.

Any difference when you try the site again?

I'm a computer moron and have unlimited tech support with my phone company. Called them up yesterday afternoon, he followed your instructions and fixed it.

Then right around noon today....again...Twitter stopped working.

That is SO weird.

more options

Hi LaffyinVegas, if you try the same steps again, does lightning strike twice?

more options

Yeah, it worked. But I don't want to go thru this crap every 2 or 3 days. Signs me out of everything.

Did I read that one way to solve it is to go to a previous version of Firefox?

How do I do that? Will that erase my bookmarks?

Why can't you guys fix this on your end? I'm not the only one this happened to.

more options

Well, the problem is getting worse.

I cleared everything early this morning and Twitter worked. It's not even 8 am here and it stopped already.

What a joke.

I guess I need to start using a different browser because this is beyond ridiculous.

Can I go back to an earlier version of Firefox? If I do, will it erase my bookmarks?

Why do you have so many problems with Twitter after yo do your "updates"? This has happened several times over the years.

more options

I'm having the same issue, I click on the Gmail button I made and nothing happens. Go to Google and click on gmail nothing happens. Works fine in Chrome. All my other google apps work, photos, calendar google drive etc.

Things I've tired

Clearing Cookies Safe Mode

Odd thing is if I go into a private window and log into google then it work.

Hi Peaty Romano, what do you get on this storage diagnostic:

https://firefox-storage-test.glitch.me/

If there are a lot of problems:

You can try removing a small amount of storage up to a large amount, as needed:

(1) Next Gen Storage Setting

This setting is normally false (off) but in case it somehow got turned on, see the steps in the following article: Some pages or page elements fail to load after updating to Firefox 70.

If that doesn't fix it (after a restart, perhaps):

(2) Flush Data for Problem Site(s)

If you tell Firefox to remove all data for a site, that should include removing its storage folder, as well as its cookies, history, and customized permissions. If you don't want to remove all data, you might be able to fix it temporarily by just removing the "cookies and site data". Here are how to access these options:

(A) Cookies and Site Data

In the dialog's search box, type goog to filter the list. Select the domain(s) relevant to Gmail and click the Remove Selected button. Then click the Save Changes button at the lower right.

Any difference when you try the site again?

(B) Forget About This Site

  • Open the Library window using Show all History (Ctrl+Shift+h)
  • In the small search box at upper right, enter enough to uniquely identify the site, such as mail.goo -- we want to avoid accidental misclicks with this feature
  • Right-click a matching history entry and choose Forget About This Site

Because Firefox modifies a number of files, this may take some time to run.

Any difference?

If that doesn't fix the problem site(s):

(3) Have Firefox Generate New Storage Folders

This will cause loss of some data saved locally by websites and add-ons.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows/File Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause briefly while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then right-click the storage folder and Rename to something like storageOLD -- the purpose of renaming instead of deleting is the possibility of reinstating the old folder or mining it for essential data.

Start Firefox back up again. Do sites work again?
