game site not saving data
For years I've been playing sudoku and crosswords on uclick.com. Now, for the last few months, I can't save a game for later, or my playing history (top scores/games played etc.) are never recorded or saved. I've deleted and reinstalled Firefox. I have the latest Flash Player. My Add Ons are AdBlock (Uclick is set for all exceptions), Acrobat, Shorten Me URL, and TinEye Reverse Image Search.

Hi armcomdes, I'm not sure where the game data is saved, but possibly in a cookie or in a Flash "supercookie." Do you have Firefox set to reject or remove cookies?
This article describes some of those settings: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them (first section only).
Firefox has an option to "Clear history when Firefox closes" which can cause this problem if Cookies are selected for removal. You can check here:
- Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
- Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
- Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
- Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it
In the left column, click Privacy & Security
Automatic Private Browsing?
On the right side, in the History section, either of these will trigger automatic private browsing, so no history is retained when Firefox is closed:
- "Firefox will: Never remember history"
- "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" + "Always use private browsing mode"
If you have either of those set, change to "Firefox will: Remember history" or uncheck the box for "Always use private browsing mode".
Clearing history at shutdown?"
Select: Firefox will: Use custom settings for history so you can view the detailed settings. Then check this setting:
- "Clear history when Firefox closes" -- not checked, ok
- "Clear history when Firefox closes" -- checked => click the Settings button and make sure "Cookies" is NOT set to be cleared
Did you make any changes? If so, does that help?
These are the settings I have set:
"Firefox will: Remember history" "Firefox will remember your browsing, download, form and search history."
I'm out of ideas at the moment for Firefox settings.
Sometimes add-ons clean up cookies, local storage, or Flash storage, but none of the ones I see on your add-ons list sound like they would do that.
Sometimes external programs clean up browser data or Flash data. I don't know which ones you might have on your Mac.
Firefox is my browser of choice. I went over to Safari, and it seems to be working fine there. Thanks for the solution ideas!
One more note -- when I play and complete a game at http://www.uclick.com/client/sci/sudoc/ using Safari, the "Puzzles Begun/Puzzles Solved" numbers are updated and recorded. I go back to Firefox, refresh the screen and the numbers update there as well. Then when I play another game on Firefox, the numbers don't update. So it's definitely a communications/settings thing with Firefox.
Hi armcomdes, just to confirm, you're playing the game in a regular window, not a private window? In private windows, websites have reduced ability to store "offline" data.
For the problem that occurs within the same session (instead of after closing/re-opening Firefox), does it work any better in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
I started in Safe Mode and the page will not load the Sudoku game. Might be because of Adobe Flash not loading.

The Flash plugin runs in Firefox's Safe Mode -- only extensions are disabled, not plugins -- and you should see the plugin notification icon at the left end of the address bar as usual. It's difficult to guess what is going on...
