I try and send an email and get the following message. An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: impout005 charter.net ESMTP server not available. I chatted with spectrum and charter and they said it's a thunderbird problem. Any help?

yep, I would guess your anti virus got an update overnight, although the message does say the server is unavailable. Indicating it was physically not responding.
But you should seriously consider correcting your setup to include the correct outgoing server information for each account. The server provided by charter may work, but it may also lead to some spam filters classifying your mail as spam. for instance mails from bill@gmail.com that originated from a charter server is probably SPAM. I would lean that way when examining the headers of an email, let alone some machine learning artificial intelligence thing like charter themselves use.

The problem reappeared this morning. I changed the smtp server and I can send email. It looks like a Charter problem that they say is a thunderbird problem. Any help?
