The en-US version of Firefox comes with a spellcheck dictionary, there is no need to install one.

I think the '''fr''' local also does though it has been awhile since I last checked. Almost all locals do not come with a dictionary due to license reasons. Was the spell checker working in 8.0 before? as did you install the en-US version of Firefox 8.0.1?
