Instead of opening another tab in the current FF, clicking a link in, say, an email, results in a message saying FF is already running but not responding and should be closed before continuing. The only way of opening a link is to copy and paste the link location into FF. What a pain! How do I stop this?

Please update to Firefox version 56.0.1 released today/tomorrow as shows you have ver 55 installed. This may or may not fix the issue. Report back after updating.

What about right clicking the URL and Open in a New Tab ?

Can also check that under Tools --> Options (no idea on yours now as is changed in version 56) TABS are ticked for Open new windows in a new tab instead and whatever else you want there done.

Can try this : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

OK. I've updated and there's no difference either in or out of safe mode. BTW, the problem is not there when I clink a link in a FF window. It's when I click a link in an email in Thunderbird.
