Favorite bookmark icons just show as a disc not an identibiable icon.
Identifiable toolbar bookmark icons not appearing. Each time I set a new bookmark in the toolbar, or edit it an existing one, all I get is an extremly unhelpfuil CD disc type icon. Soon all my toolbar bookmark icons will be exactly the same, thus rendering the toolbar useless. For me, this is a vital part of the browser yet it seems utterly neglected. Add-ons wihich purport to address this issue (whicj shows how prevalent it is) simply don't work. The only browser I now that properly deals with this issue is IE11 but it is so slow loading pages as to be useless.
I'm using the latest version of Firefox but this issue has been apparent for many previous versions.

Works for me on Firefox 50 when dragging the tab into the Bookmarks Toolbar. But I did notice that webpage takes a long time to load; the Favcion needs to be showing in the Tab or Firefox won't save the Favicon if I try to "drag" it while the page is still loading.
Next thing to do is to try the Firefox Safe Mode and see it that works then. Firefox Safe Mode

Hello thanks for Software best Would Thinks Only Mozilla Firefox is very very good software thanks
Utterly irrelevant to my issue and probably any issue as it seems to be nothing more than a praising thank you to Mozilla.
Firefox should be saving the "Favicon" [as it is called] the first time each new bookmark is used. If that is happening typically the Favicon image wasn't able to be found by Firefox. It has been like that since "Places" was introduced in Firefox 3.0.
Editing a bookmark shouldn't make an existing Favicon go away, once Firefox has saved it.
Now if that has changed as of Firefox 50, I would look at your installed extensions as being the probable cause. I haven't seen an issue like that with Firefox 50 and we haven't been deluged with complaints about that type of issue in the last 5 days since Firefox 50 was released; and not during the 6 week Beta phase, either.
That said, you can make Firefox save the Favicon image when you save a new Bookmark by using drag'n'drop to save the new Bookmark. Simply click&hold the mouse button on a Tab or the left-side of the Location Bar (disk image or the "lock") and 'drag' to the Bookmarks Toolbar; when you release the left-mouse button the new Bookmark and the Favicon will be saved. Also works when saving a new Bookmark to the Bookmarks Sidebar; and also to either of the two Bookmarks Menu drop-down menus, although selecting the correct folder you want can be a bit difficult [like trying to hit a moving target].
As far as I know, there are no add-ons currently available to retrieve Favicon images en masse, In the past there have been one or two available for most versions of Firefox, but after awhile they have been abandoned by their developer and were lost due to lack of compatibility with Firefox as new versions of Firefox were released.

Thank you for your response. However, nothing suggested has solved the issue. I have removed all extensions and followed the drag n drop method but it still just shows the CD icon. I bookmarked the same site in Chrome and it did display the icon - presumably that confirms the favicon is accessible. It's just that Firefox can't load it. This is the link I'm trying but all are the same-just a grey disc icon. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/

Thanks again. I ran Firefox in safe mode but it made no difference.
there are no icons in the tabs on any website I access.
I reset Firefox and that restored the tab icons and enabled the toolbar icons to be generated.
Thanks!
Hello Thank you very much is very good Only Best Software World
I'm having the same problem. I am using the roomy toolbar add-on and have attached an image of what my bookmark bar looks like. It used to be filled with icons so I could see exactly which one I was looking for. Firefox without the favicons is really painful for me, though still my preferred choice. Please dear God can someone figure this out? I have LOVED add-ons like Favicon Picker 2 for many, many years but newer releases of FF seem to be phasing out the best customizations I've relied on (plus the multiple group pages). Please stop ff - you're killing me! Using version 53.0.2. Have checked several settings in about:config. Dragging and dropping new links to the bookmark bar DO NOT result in favicons displaying. Clicking on the link to try to have it refresh itself does not work. I can't think of anything left to try - i even recall uninstalling ad reinstalling FF.
hi stbro
There has been a bug about favicons that should have been fixed by now.
- bug 1345456 - Favicon fails to display for majority of tabs upon restart
I'm not sure what the right way to proceed would be in cases like this.
Does this also affect newly added tabs? Does it work in a new window?

The link you provided says the issue was resolved in version 52. Since I'm on 53 am I to assume the "fix" did not work in my case?
