In Thunderbird you open the Address Book window and select Tools-Import. Ask AOL how to export your address book in a CSV file format. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Migration

Access your account from the AOL webmail page, click Contacts in the left pane, then click Tools/Export, select LDIF format, save the contacts.ldif file.

In TB, Tools/Import...Address Books... Text file... select the contacts.ldif file, and a "contacts" address book will be added to the TB Address Book.

If you run the import from Address Book/Tools/Import, the imported address book will appear empty, but not after you close and re-open Address Book.
