so I'm reading some news and they mention a city, can I enter that city's name in the search bar and have the results open in a different tab instead of the news I'm reading?

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.

Type browser.search.openintab and set it to true.

For the Google website you can set preferences on the Google results page via the gear icon in the top right corner, click that button to open the menu list and select Search settings.

Google settings are stored in a PREF cookie on your computer, so you need to create an allow exception to keep cookies for Google to save the settings, otherwise you have to repeat it.

Where results open: Open search results in a new browser window.
