need to update from 3.6; was told there is an incompatibility
Got the "warning" today about the impending lack of support for FF 3.6, and then was told that my system (by which they mean XP SP2, I assume) was incompatible with the latest version. I clicked on the link to a page with the supposedly compatible version, but it seemed to be saying that it was the latest version. I don't want to download something incompatible and then have no browser. Can someone please tell me exactly what version would be compatible and possibly provide a link?
Thanks, Ellen

Hi ellenelle,
The latest version can always be downloaded straight from http://www.mozilla.org/firefox. Currently the latest stable release is 11, and it's definitely supported in Windows XP SP2. Where were you told that it wasn't supported on your system?
Anyway, go to http://www.mozilla.org/firefox and download and install the latest version and you should be good to go.
The system requirements are just Windows XP http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/11.0/system-requirements . If you have SP2 you should update to SP3 by running Windows update. SP2 is no longer supported by Microsoft and SP3 contains important updates.
If for some reason you run into a problem, Firefox 3.6 can be re-downloaded here - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Perhaps my having SP2 is what caused me to get the message that my system was incompatible. But I'd rather not install SP3 at this time. Which version should I download in that case?
Thanks, Ellen

You should download the latest Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/firefox
But, what I guess I'm not making clear is, this morning, when I opened Firefox I got one of those messages: "You're almost there!" and an exhortation to download the latest version. However, below that was another message saying the latest version was incompatible with my system and that I should click on a link to take me to whatever version was compatible. When I clicked on the link, I saw what looked like the latest version, but there was no number given. Unfortunately, I did not save the link, which I see now I should have done.

The latest Firefox will work with your system. I just suggested that you update to service pack 3 because Microsoft has stopped supporting service pack 2 which now has unpatched security flaws.
