OK - I have searched and Googled.

This happens with FF 46 32 bit, 64 bit, portable, on Win 7 32 bit, 64 bit and windows 10. It happen in safe mode. It has all plugins up to date. I t has remove all but needed and non removable add ins - such as Flash, Acrobat Reader, etc. It happens on computers with plenty of RAM (16 GB). Oddly enough, it happens worse with safe mode and plugin container is run-a-way. With normal mode, it appears that plugin container is under control and Firefox itself runs amuck.

So - totally repeatable. Page down in Firefox with one or 50 tabs open - no matter. It will crash. Goes black, or stops responding. Until Firefox closes. NEVER happens with Edge for example.

I have to think it is a Firefox memory leak, but even using Firemin does not help much if at all.

What can be done? I have done my homework!

Yes noted thanks. We are not yet certain of course if this will remain the case when Firefox 50 makes it through to Release.

Alex,

Please let me know if there is a particular build you would like me to try. I'd be happy to, but also do not have the time to test a build that likely has no improvement for this issue.

Just let me know.

I am so getting tired of the crashes....

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

This is on every one of three different computers (all I have) with 32 and 64 bit OS and win 7 and 10, etc. If only one, I think worth a try. But all three with the only thing similar Firefox 47? I doubt it.

~Bob

Off on vacation for a week.

Still hoping for a reply or build with some fix for this. A recap: Three computers, three different operating systems, three different video cards. Can only be either Firefox or Facebook.

I'll try other builds but I doubt unless they are addressing THIS problem they will do much. And need to know what to try rather than an obscure suggestion.

Anyone interested in fixing this likely memory leak after all these years?

Getting worse. No warnings now.

Sure glad the big guns have checked in with fixes and helpful suggestions on what to try.

Just tell me no one cares and I'll stop posting. But I am not the only one with Firefox crashes with Facebook. And just to remind those that want to boot safe, etc, this happens safe and on THREE computers with three different operating systems and three different video cards.

Frustrating....

¡Hola!

We do care and we're very sorry you're crashing.

bp-abc249bc-f84d-48c1-8d94-954fa2160720 and bp-b156317f-f541-4e9d-9271-5f36e2160717 are Out Of Memory (OOM) errors. You could make these less frequent if you grab a 64-bit version of Firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ if you're not yet rocking a 64-bit Firefox.

bp-9491951f-4c72-4d84-a7f8-1a8012160719 is being fixed on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1286904

Kindly let us know if this helps you.

Crashes in 64 bit as well. I have both installed.

For grins, I will go confirm that I can crash 64 on Firefox now. ..

Back in just a bit.

more options

OK. must admit I have not been ablle to crash 64 bit. Have not tried in a while, but today, it is stable. BUT, that does not solve eiether:

1. The 32 bit machine needs, nor 2. Just how much memory Firefox uses on Facebook in BOTH 32 and 64 bit

In 64 it can use 5 GB of memory. 5 GB. Using 65% of available memory on the computer total with OS and Firefox running.

In 32 bit it crashes when it reaches 3.3 GB or so.

This is insane memory usage, would you not agree?

So, for today, I am using 64 bit. Let's see if it remains stable. But one of three of my computers will not be working as well and will continue to crash.

Bob how was the stability of the 64 bit after the end of yesterday?

more options

I let it build to using 6GB of RAM and it did not crash. But perhaps reread that: 6 GB of RAM. Don't you think that's an issue? It starts out using 2 GB or so before I even open Facebook. So there is a systemic problem. But it does work. Just not well managed.

Thanks for asking.

BUT, my official work computer is 32 bit. So no love there. Still crashes very easily.

Radio silence. Using 7 GB memory as shown. Memory leak here or denial? I am amazed no one cares and does not seem to recognize there is and has been for a looooong time a problem.

Not sure if the image will be seen here. I hope it will.

¡Hola Bob!

As we can see from your screen captures, Facebook is munching your CPU and most likely RAM.

Please file a bug to them or just close that tab when you're not actively using it.

Let us know if this solves your question.

¡Gracias!

Does not happen with Edge on my one Windows 10 computer.

Have you ever tried to file anything with Facebook? Where does one file?

Does not solve my issue, of course.

Hi Bob, This seems rather odd about 50 questions and answers and you are still crashing. One of the elephants in the room here is plugn container is mentioned it the thread title as the being involved and yet you seem to imply plugins are not used. How can that be ?

With a bit of luck the two Admins are still following this and may come up with other suggestions if they disagree with this. The fact you have crashes on multiple computers is interesting, but the three computers likely have very many things in common.

This is a long thread, so apologies for the fact I may not have fully read and digested it all before making this post. in4m8n said

Thanks. Just to reiterate: 100% repeatable Only on Facebook 3 computers - Win 7 32 / 64 and Win 10 Does not happen with Edge No plugin container running No Adobe Flash running Let me know what else I can do to provide information. ~Bob

Can we please try a very basic configuration on all three of these computers and see what happens. Do any or all of them crash like this, and if so please provide a couple of crash IDs from each machine.

I wonder if we can try to nail some of this down in a sort of structured manner.

Please do all of these

That may prevent crashes. But I would like it confirmed; ( or comment otherwise) ; else we may all be barking up the wrong tree so to speak.

Should you see crashes like that the next step tightens things up further. In addition to the above use a new Firefox profile and use Windows safe mode. I will explain that as necessary.

Yet another stage would be to first of all try a clean install of Firefox. That is something that does not always help but we may need to rule out that your files are corrupt, possibly because of malware spread on to all three computers. I am at the moment partially ignoring the OOM factor. I imagine it could be due to fragmentation rather than absolute memory use but again we can look in to that.

Also (Yes I realise some of this info will be in the crash reports ) for each machine.

  • Approximately how many tabs are open in Firefox when it crashes.
  • What sort of memory usage is task manager showing when it crashes (compared to total RAM)

Try as detailed at https://www.facebook.com/help/326603310765065/ the about:performance screen captures from earlier shall do as evidence IMHO.

Please also try and provide answers for John's questions above.

Wow. Just wrote pages of an answer and it disappeared clicking a link. Damn. This will likely be shorter.

And sorry. I needed a few days away from this.

Plugin Container:

If I disable Adobe Flash, then Plugin Container is not used. Firefox will crash elsewhere. Early on, PC was on and that was where it crashed. No longer the issues.

I will try ONE computer. Easiest is a 64 bit machine using 32 bit Firefox. Will crash as memory hits around 3.2 GB. 64 bit has not crashed yet, but as you have seen will use up to 7 GB and NEVER release that memory until the Facebook tab is closed. Edge, for example, seems to clear memory after the video or gif object is off screen. So memory remains low. Not Firefox.

I will not do anything to Windows - not even safe mode. Which would likely be 640 x 480. Life is too short.

This is three different computers with three different operating systems. What would be the odds?

And I will guarantee I could make this happen on a fresh install out of the box. Its not Windows. Nor is it Malware. This is a not a "format the hard drive and reinstall windows" kind of fix. This is an issue with Firefox.

And forgive me John, but I really think the FF developers are in denial on the memory leaks in FF. Google and you will easily find I am not the only one with issues. And FF memory leaks have been reported forever. 7 GB in 64 Bit on Facebook page with 2 tabs open and only one Facebook? 7 GB?

So, I will try safe mode. I will disable all plugins, but then might as well be using Chrome. The reason I use Firefox is the plugins. And the usefulness they bring.

As to tabs, could be as little as two. Never tried one. The more tabs open, the faster FF will crash.

And Alex, i will try Facebook. But I think this is a Firefox issue, not Facebook. After all, what app is crashing? And then why does Edge not crash? And why would Firefox ever allow the app to bloat to use 7 GB RAM? I think FF is the elephant in the room, not Facebook. But I will report.

Safe Mode. One tab. Crashed early at maybe 2.8 GB RAM used on 32 bit FF.

Do I really need to do this with all the plugins disabled as well, John? Will Facebook even run without Java for example?
