When I press Ctrl-Shft-T and the last closed tab is restored, it brings it up all by itself, as if it was in a brand new Tab Group. However, upon the next tab opening, that reopened tab (as well as the new one) are shown in the correct group and I'm able to get back to my other tabs. I noticed this behavior only when the Tab Group addon was installed on top of Firefox 44.0.

I tried the solution here but that didn't help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1085696

Of course, for now the workaround is to disable the Tab Group addon and restart, but will this be fixed in (or before?) the version of Firefox that gets rid of Tab Groups?

"fixed" by disabling a random (other) addon, restarting, (trying to reproduce the issue), re-enabling that same addon, restarting again.

You would have to contact the developer of the Tab Group extension and ask him to support this feature. Firefox 44 is the last Firefox version that supports tab groups, so the Firefox devs won't fix any issues with the current code for tab groups.
