After updating Thunderbird to 38.3.0, I can no longer download incoming mail. It seems that the connection to the POP mail server is failing.

A pop-up on the screen displays "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server pop3.free.fr responded:",, and nothing else. Removing SSL/TLS security does not fix the problem.

The troubleshooting log displays several errors:

Timestamp: 26/10/2015 14:03:50 Error: An error occurred during a connection to pop3.free.fr:110. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

Timestamp: 26/10/2015 14:07:26 Error: syntax error Source File: https://aus4.mozilla.org/update/3/Thunderbird/38.3.0/20150928051427/WINNT_x86-msvc/en-US/release/Windows_NT%205.1.3.0%20(x86)/default/default/update.xml?force=1 Line: 1, Column: 50 Source Code:

Unfortunately I don't know which version was previous previously installed, and didn't have this problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated... Joel_S

First check your anti-virus/firewall program.

After a Thunderbird update, sometimes the anti-virus/firewall program thinks it is a different program. Close thunderbird. Open up anti-virus/firewall program and check that your anti-virus/firewall program has been set to allow thunderbird. On one occasion I had to set to block and then reset to allow. then restart Thunderbird.

What anti-virus product are you using?

Hi Toad-Hall,

Thanks for helping. Unfortunately this didn't cure the problem. I am using Avast! and I disabled the "Mail Shield". I also made Thunderbird an exception in the Windows Firewall configuration, but still no progress. I am using Win XP SP3. The Thunderbird troubleshoot screen displayed several error message (screenshot is attached)

Thanks again!

Joel
