Why is the web page not saving in bookmarks even though I am clicking the "star" icon?

I click the "star" to save to bookmarks. I then go to the icon to sort the book marks. Nothing is there. I have followed all instructions. This is very frustrating.

  • Clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that
  • Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar (Alt+B)
  • If the URL in the Navigation toolbar is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click the highlighted star or use "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" menu item (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark (name, location) and move it to another folder or remove the bookmark

I have done this over and over...it does not work.

Click the star once. That should light up the star. Click it a second time. A window will come up asking if you want to remove the bookmark. You can remove it, edit it, or choose what bookmark folder you want it to be in.

Sort cut; Go to an empty area of the web page. Right click and select Bookmark This Page. A winder will come up. You can edit it, and choose what bookmark folder you want it to be in.

So, nothing is present in the Unsorted bookmarks folder?

Does the star get highlighted blue or doesn't anything happen?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

The star turns blue and floats to the suitcase. Nothing appears in the unsorted bookmark area. It keeps saying "empty". Really stinks. Explorer never had this issue.

What folder is shown as the current location if you click the blue star another time to get the "Edit this Bookmark" dialog?

Just had a thought. My bookmarks folder has multiple folders with the same name. Including Unsorted.

Hello - Roy Cornock here: The idea below may do the trick. Can you give me the B/M icon back again, please ? It has disappeared along with the star also..........................but i'd rather get rid of the star icon altogether....Yes ?

Roy Cornock again.

I opened the Customise page again and at the bottom Rt.hand corner I saw:- 'RESTORE DEFAULTS'. Clicked this and the Star and B/M icons were returned to top Right hand corner. Simply take the cursor and hover over them and it becomes a tiny hand. Press and it holds them and you can take them to the left corner - BUT you can't get rid if the accursed Star icon more's the pity !!!! I DO NOT WANT THE STAR. I WANT TO SAVE ANY ITEM THAT I THINK IS NECESSARY - THERE AND THEN WITH NO SHENNANIGANS !

Hello Roy Cornock, Thank you very much for posting your solution to the FAVORITES oops "Bookmarks." I am writing about the MENU icon. It does not appear on "pages" here, beginning about two days ago. The star icon shows up here as a sort of orange. I have not seen it in the blue you mention...again, since approx. two days ago. If the star icon would change color, comp users are supposed to be able to select a site or article or whatever and KEEP it/them. Of course since I cannot find the Menu icon, locating "restore defaults" can not be done. Oh how I wish the MSoft tactic of forcing computer users to drop WXP or the W7 I used had never happened. I have gone online and found refurbished W7-loaded computers for a fairly reasonable price. It is my intention to get a W7 comp, move what little I have put into this computer into an E H D, and hopefully go on happily using the W7 machine after moving E H D info into the W7. Crossing fingers... Thank you again for posting your tech-wise solutions here. Omnigusted. p.s.: W8.1, FM32.0. I hope those two things are the "requested information" written about immediately below this window.
