Why do I have to insert someone else's resume into my profile to change my copy paste settings??
I just want to use copy/paste with my mouse. Why can't you make it just a toggle in Firefox? Why do I have to enter someone else's resume in my user.js file?? That makes even LESS sense.
For Firefox:
Quit Firefox. If you have Quick Launch running (in Windows, an icon in the toolbar), quit that too. Find your Firefox profile directory. Open the user.js file from that directory in a text editor. If there's no user.js file, create one. Add these lines to user.js:
[edit: removed personal information]
Note: The preference is site as well as protocol specific. For example:
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.mozilla.org")
is not the same as:
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "https://www.mozilla.org")
This is because the first uses HTTP while the second uses HTTPS.
If you want to allow multiple URLs to access the Paste operation, separate the URLs with a space. For example:
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites",
"https://www.mozilla.org https://developer.mozilla.org")
For more information about security policies, see http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/components/ConfigPolicy.html.

Hey woodenuknow
I found that page you were talking about with the instructions to put someone else's resume in your user.js file. That page was hacked by someone who wanted to cause trouble. So sorry for that annoyance. I'm trying to get someone to fix that page and delete the resume.
And for anyone else reading, "Reset Firefox" won't fix this problem. This is a problem that happens on certain sites using certain text editors.
And I was wondering which one of those sites gave you the link to the hacked user.js instructions page from the pasting error message you got?
Out of the WHMCS, FreshDesk, ActivCollab, Vworker, Guru and Freelancer sites, I may not be able to register accounts with all of them. But for that one site that gives the error message, I'll try to make a account. As I would like to see what that error message says. I think that company did a good job doing that b/c many websites give no kind of warning or error for the copy & paste problem so I'd like to see how they set it up. Thanks.

Can you restate your question? What are you trying to achieve?
I posted the EXACT instructions I was given to allow copy/paste to work in Firefox. Sites don't let me use COPY or PASTE via the mouse menu. They all require that I use Ctrl C, V, X.
Why can't Firefox have a TOGGLE or something simple to allow it to use copy/paste via mouse on websites? I have NO IDEA how to follow those instructions for changing my security settings. Especially when the code I am supposed to add to user.js (whatever and wherever THAT is), is someone else's RESUME as I posted above.
Give me a setting to change in the Firefox menu. Do NOT make me have to hire a programmer for something that Internet Explorer can do without a problem.
Unless the site as disabled that feature for some reason there's no reason you shouldn't be able to copy text with the context menu and you certainly shouldn't have to follow those crazy instructions. What are some sites you are having problems with?
WHMCS, FreshDesk, ActivCollab, Vworker, Guru, Freelancer...
every site that I need to copy and paste from either a client's email to a ticket, or from my own text files to post for a job.
Internet explorer 7 and 9 can copy/paste to these sites without a problem, both XP and Win7 . So can Firefox on XP.
The error message I get on Win 7 with Firefox says it is due to MY browser's security settings. Not theirs.
Yeah, copy & paste should work fine without any of that. But I've seen copy & paste disabled on computers at work before. Because the webpages used at the workplace could be using Javascript to do copy actions. Are you at a computer at work or home? And do you have any addons installed in Firefox?
One of the addons could have broken your copy & pasting.
Try this:
Click the Firefox button > Add-ons > Extensions
Then if you see any items there, click on the Disable button for each one. Close Firefox and reopen it. Let me know if copy & paste is still broken.
Did you see a add-on called New.net? A few years ago this was breaking copy and paste. It gets installed when you install certain programs.
And what website did you find that code and resume from? I want to check it out.

These are the sites... WHMCS, FreshDesk, ActivCollab, (through 3 online jobs that I have in 3 different countries, sorry, cannot give password protected site links) and Vworker, Guru, Freelancer. (when looking for more jobs)
It is a home computer, used to access these work sites and job finding sites. These are the only ones I need to copy/paste things onto or off of.
I don't have that Firefox image button... I found Tools> addons but it is for adding them... not showing me what I have. But I do know that whatever I have on Win7, I also have on XP Firefox, because I want them to be identical. (2 netbooks, side by side on my desk). I have never seen new.net
How else can I find that list? It occasionally shows up accidentally, and I disable or delete things I did not specifically add, but I do not have a firefox dropdown menu on either computer... they are identical.
I have file, edit, view, history, bookmarks, tools, help
Sorry about that. You can find the addons by using:
Tools > Add-ons > Extensions
"Extensions" is under the "Get Add-ons" item

I'm thinking maybe those sites use different text editors than other websites making copy and pasting outside of those webpages a PITA.
This site tries to explain how to do what you were trying to do earlier.
http://www.infogears.com/cgi-bin/infogears/mozilla_firefox_copy_paste.html
Which is to enable access to the clipboard (the place where copied items are stored) for these sites.
The addon AllowClipboard Helper tries to fix this on websites like the ones you go to. But it can be tricky to setup. There's a good tip from one of the reviewer's of that addon by the guy named pewe (Link to review).
So in Firefox, copying is blocked from certain text editors.
This article tries to explain why Firefox does this:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Granting_JavaScript_access_to_the_clipboard
It works in Internet Explorer because they are not strict about this "Javascript access to clipboard" feature but Firefox is b/c they think it's a security risk since the website can read and copy whatever you put into the clipboard.
So long story short, certain websites use text editors that make it impossible to copy & paste stuff from them to other areas where you want to copy & paste. You could try all the stuff I mentioned above (although it's a bit nerdy) or you can save yourself the trouble/frustration and just use Internet Explorer when browsing these websites.
If you hate switching between IE & Firefox just to check a few sites, try the IE Tab addon. It lets you use Internet Explorer inside Firefox by opening it in a special tab. Don't ask me how they do it. :P But it works.
You can try resetting Firefox. This will restore all of the default settings while preserving your bookmarks, passwords and history. More info and instructions are here - Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
Thank you. I have only ANT downloader enabled. For videos.. Have had it for ages. Anything else that might have snuck in has been deleted when that page accidently shows up. L
I have reset Firefox a few weeks ago, for this problem, but it did not fix it. I found you folks because I actually got a link today in pasting error message that led to the instructions to put someone else's resume in my user.js file. and that page led me to you.
Use the keyboard if the buttons on the web page aren't working.
- Copy: Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Insert
- Paste: Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert
- Cut: Ctrl+X or Shift+Delete

I already know how to use the keyboard commands, as I stated above...they have not changed since DOS 1.1
I am mobility-challenged and the mouse is much easier.

Hello,
I fixed the problem with allowclipboard, so am unable to tell you which of my usual problem sites gave me the link to MDN page. Hacked, eh? Wierd hacker if that was all he did... LOL
But it was either vworker.com, which you can make an account on, or the WHMCS site that is hosted by my my boss which you cannot make an account on. My boss is an IT security expert and even letting ME in was a major leap of trust for him. LOL
Ah, glad to hear AllowClipboard saved the day. Hehe yeah about that "hacker", more like a spammer/troll that vandalized the page.
Thanks. I'll see if I can view it using that site you gave. And about your boss' site, lol, understood.
