On Linux, the save/open dialog is unresponsive and takes a while to allow me to select between open/save.
I'm not talking about the "Ok" button delay, which is fine.
But the whole save/open dialog starts unresponsive, and I cannot choose between save or open the download file for a while. Once I click save or open, it gets unresponsive again and I have to wait a few seconds to move on. It's a pain.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?
Let’s do a full clean re-install;
Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}
Save the file. Then Close Firefox.
Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.
Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders
Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac
Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux
If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.
Do Not remove any profile folders.
After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

It didn't work. I've tried:
- starting in safe-mode as suggested - fully uninstalling, keeping only the profile folder - fully uninstalling and starting a new profile
In all cases the save dialog still misbehaves. After uninstalling I've searched (sudo find / -iname *firefox*, and also in dconf) for any possible file or configuration left in the system. It was clear. Rebooted and then reinstalled firefox. Pretty much a fresh install.
I'm running Antergos Linux with Cinnamon. I'll check with more friends with anyone is having similar issues. If I find something, I'll post here.
This has been happening to me for a few weeks now. I am also running Linux, albeit debian 32-bit. I'm not running the debian version of firefox, but the upstream version. These hangs are happening across all my [5] profiles, so is probably not due to a setting or something in my control.
My best guess is that it's a network issue of some sort, especially because the hangs are anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes.
I recall some years ago when DNS took a while to reply, firefox would freeze. I solved that one by setting my computer to query multiple DNS servers in parallel.
Some versions of Firefox on Linux experience slowness or freezing related to the Downloads dialog. A bug is on file to try to get to the bottom of it. See: Download file dialog halts firefox for a very long time on Linux Mint.
I don't know whether there is a workaround. Someone on Reddit said it doesn't affect Firefox Nightly (future Firefox 66) but if you like stability, that may not be anything you want to test out.
