Logitech k400 touchpad scroll (and scroll wheel not working in general)

I'm using Firefox Beta 19 for Android on a MK808 mini PC (but this applies also to other devices when using any kind of external keyboard/mouse combo; I tested this also with a Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition tablet with similar results).

My keyboard is a Logitech K400 with a touchpad. It should scroll the page when swiped down/up with two fingers. The functionality does not work in Firefox; instead I have to hold the mouse button and swipe with one finger. The two-finger scroll gesture works with Chrome and the stock browser on this device, so this issue should be fixable. This is kind of annoying because Firefox acts differently from other apps.

Also, upon testing this with another wireless keyboard/mouse combo with an actual mouse I found out that the scroll wheel of the mouse was not working. Again, it works in Chrome, so this is a Firefox only behaviour. (Actually this makes perfect sense, because the two finger scroll is the Logitech keyboard's way of emulating the scroll wheel.) This is actually good news, because now I am sure sufficiently many users will be annoyed with this bug and it should get fixed.

Note: in case this information is useful, the mouse scrolling works on the Firefox start page with the thumbnails for most used links, but not on any other pages.

Addition: Found the bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686228

Apparently there is a fix, but when does it reach the beta channel?

Yes! It works in Aurora! Although for some reason the logic is inverse to that of Chrome (scrolling downwards moves the page down in the viewport instead of up). I can live with it.

Edit: Well, it works partially in Aurora. Mouse/touchpad scrolling does not work on pages that have independently scrollable fields (such as the Tweetdeck web interface with different columns) or parts that are supposed to be stationary. Hopefully that (and the inverse direction) will be fixed later.

Try pressing f7 in order to switch off caret browsing mode, it may have got turned on somehow which would cause such issues.

Sorry, but pressing F7 did not do anything I could see in the mobile browser. I had to check with the desktop browser to see what it was supposed to do, and I don't think this caret browsing function exists in the mobile version.

Also tried installing the latest non-beta mobile FIrefox alongside the beta, without syncing anything, and the nonfunctionality of mouse scrolling is present in that one, too. Am considering giving up on mobile Firefox on at least this device.

I missed the fact you were on mobile version actually, my apologies you are correct.

Do you have the "Don't Keep Activities" setting checked in the developer option of the Android Settings? We have seen this setting cause problems with keyboards in the past.

  • Press the Home button
  • Press the Apps listing button
  • Select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Developer options'
  • Deselect "Don't keep activities'

I looked and Don't Keep Activities is not checked. In fact I haven't messed with the developer options at all.

I should have mentioned or asked you this earlier, have you checked to see if your device is compilable with FF Mobile & supported?

See:

Will Firefox work on my mobile device?

Had an issue such as this today where everything met min specs except it was Targa 2 platform whith 4.1.1 jellybean OS. Honestly mobile seems to be rather buggy and picky lately, seen lot more problems both personally and come through here.

Well, I have tested this now on 3 devices with similar results:

  • the MK808 mini pc with Jelly Bean
  • Motorola XOOM 2 ME tablet with ICS
  • Samsung Galaxy SII phone with ICS

I don't believe any of them are incompatible, as I got FF for each from the Play store, and it does work fine except for this one quirk. I had no use for keyboards and mice for Android until I got the MK808 a couple of days ago, and that's when this problem surfaced.

The scrolling does work:

  • on the Firefox "New tab" page with the "Top sites" list
  • on the 3 tabs that are shown when I click the address box (History, Top sites, and Bookmarks)

The scrolling does *not* work

  • on any other webpages

So the problem is not that Firefox does not recognize the scroll wheel or two finger swipe gesture. It does recognize it. But it has for some reason disabled it for webpages.

Apparently this is the bug in question: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686228

It seems a fix exists, one hopes it will come to the betas soonish...
