Backup Codes Not Working (Backup authentication code not found)
I added 2FA to my account on 10 October 2021, and recently bought a new phone with a fresh Authenticator app. I have all my backup codes saved already so I thought it wouldn't be any worries.
I was wrong, I've been facing this error for all the 10 different codes: Backup authentication code not found
I only have one Firefox account with 2FA, so I'm 100% confident this is the right account. I have access to my email associated with the locked out Firefox account and I can see the email mentioning that I activated 2FA on 10 October 2021, and there are no emails beyond that regarding my 2FA.
I am a developer who have published Firefox Addons - so I am not able to just create a new account, I need this account specifically.
I have the following info:
- Password
- Backup codes (that don't work, I can provide screenshot of the codes upon request)
- Gmail Access associated with the Firefox account
Help really appreciated, Tomas

My apologies for a late response. The people who would have that access are Matt and Wayne Mery. I don't have their contact info, but they both appear regularly on the forum. david
Tomas,
You are using Firefox sync?
Hi Wayne Mery! Nope, no Firefox sync!

Then I have no idea what you are doing. Because you wrote "I have access to my email associated with the locked out Firefox account.
Please tell us more.
Sure - sorry for explaining it poorly.
I'm only able to sign into my account using my email & password, but I get stuck trying to reset my 2FA, here: https://i.imgur.com/gA7Bqsz.png
I reset it for all my other apps already without any issues, but Firefox keeps saying Backup authentication code not found despite never using any of them before. I'm 100% sure it's the correct account, and I'm 100% I am typing in the codes properly.
Let me know if that makes more sense. Thank you!
If this is about logging in to the Add-ons website then it might be better to ask at the Mozilla Discourse forum site.
Thomas, what web site are you actually trying to access? Cor-el's adsvise is pertinent, but of little real benefit if you are accessing the Thunderbird variant of the addon site software used on addons.thunderbird.net which is significantly older that that used on addons.Mozilla.org
I am not familiar with 2FA as it applies to Firefox accounts, but having the web site you are accessing will allow us to point you in the right direction for support.
The developer account login is the same as the regular Firefox account. The one I'm trying to reach is this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/addons
After logging in, it brings you to Add-on Developer Hub which looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/DNQRGPA.png
This is the page I need to access to update my addon, and it's not related to Thunderbird at all as far as I know. Hope that helps!

I'd assume 'reset' means you did turn off 2-step authentication for your Firefox account? If so, that invalidates any existing backup codes. When turning 2-step authentication back on for your Firefox account, you can register the new phone's authenticator app as 2nd factor, and you'll also have to create new backup codes.
If this isn't what you did, then I have no idea.
The other apps I'm referring to are Stripe, Paypal, Google and so on. And what I meant by 'reset' is that I was able to turn off the 2-step authentication (using backup codes), and then enable it again using my new phone.
My Firefox account never had its 2-step authentication reset, I still have the same 8 backup codes since I first activated 2-step authentication. The only issue is that these 8 codes are all "used" without me ever using them.
When you're logged in to your Firefox account, and you want to remove 2-step authentication, why would you need a backup code?
I can't log in to remove the 2-step authentication. I enter my email & password, but can't get past the the 2-step authentication step. Since I don't have the old device, I need to use the backup codes. But they don't work.
This is the screen I'm stuck at: https://i.imgur.com/gA7Bqsz.png
Hi
If you do not have a working 2FA account, access codes or secondary email address, you will not be able to access the account.
I have a secondary email address, and my backup codes (that don't work). Again - I've not used either of the backup codes before. It's most likely a bug.
Assuming there's no way to get back in, is there a way I can at least transfer my Extension to a fresh account? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/kanbantab/
Anyone? ; _ ;
I have this same issue - I added 2FA to my account On 9/20/2021, I printed out the 2FA backup codes and even confirmed that the backup codes worked by using one of them.
I hadn't logged into my firefox account in quite some time, but needed to update my add-on.
... and now I can't do that. My codes from google authenticator aren't being accepted (yes, I attempted to re-sync the time - non-firefox sites like github and facebook accept the google authenticator-generated codes just fine, so I *really* think it's a firefox issue), and all of my backup codes (I'd only used one before) are rejected.
I really think that there's been some DB corruption or other bug with the 2fa flow.

> I hadn't logged into my firefox account in quite some time, but needed to update my add-on. Perhaps it's an issue with Firefox for people who also have add-ons active, because I've only found three people with this issue - all of which seem unresolved.
It's been exactly 3 months in my case, and unless I get this issue resolved soon I'll just stop supporting Firefox for my add-ons all together. I don't want to upload multiple versions of my add-on while also risking being locked out again for using 2FA.
Please, Firefox gods - help us get back into our accounts.
