I have an issue where Firefox crashes almost every single day. Luckily I have session manager so it comes back as if nothing was lost but what a pain. Can anyone help me understand what is causing it?

Any help would really be gratefully appreciated .

hey it looks like you are having hardware acceleration problem

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thanks, I did that and had another crash while not using the computer.

There's a small chance this crash could be malware related.

Try these free programs to scan for malware:

Update each program's virus definitions database before doing a scan.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Let us know if your scans find anything.

I have Spybot Search & Destroy with the latest data files, it scanned and found nothing. In addition I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i that also has the latest DAT files and updates daily. I don't think this is malware related. I also had another crash today while I was away from the computer all day.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Try a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

So I finally did an un-install and fresh install today after I rebooted and deleted the directory. Unfortunately I had another crash just now:

It seems to be the same crash type. So any further thoughts? This is the only application I have problems with.

Did you try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen)?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I've always run McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7. I also as posted above ran Spybot that found nothing. I ran Malwarebytes and MS SafetyScanner that also found nothing. I don't think this is malware issue. Otherwise I would be having more problems or other app issues than just Firefox.

I continue to have crashes to Firefox, any further advice? I will add that I had a new motherboard, CPU, & video card replaced this week for an intermittent BSOD I had been seeing. HP claimed that my original hardware needed to be refreshed. So I have still seen Firefox crashes after this as referenced below:

All the errors seem to be: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ
