Make sure that "View > [X] Status Bar" has a check mark.

Use View -> Status bar ; and click on it so the tick/check mark appears.

Note in the next version firefox 4 the status bar is being replaced see What happened to the Status Bar?, and if you want something similar you will then need to use an add-on.

Thanks for the help guys. I did read about the new version not having one. They should make it so it's not visible unless you're hovering over a link or until you move your mouse down there instead. Doesn't make sense to do away with it entirely.
