I have a customers dead laptop, she wants her firefox profile copied to her new laptop.

Since the laptop is dead, I can't use sync. I have her profile data, which is useless in her new laptop.

For future reference, how am I supposed to do this? I've always kept as many customers as I can on firefox.

Is there a conversion tool? A way around this? Or am I just going to have to say shes out of luck?

Chosen solution

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Note that best is to avoid copying a full profile folder.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Now Close Firefox. This is your current profile. Copy the folder As Is to a folder on a thumb drive. Then Copy the folder to the new system.

Since version 67 with the dedicated profiles you can't move them over like you used to. I tried.

Why you can't move them? What's happening?

Nothing happens. I'm moving them from the appdata/mozilla/profiles folder. Always worked before

Firefox remains unchanged

Try to enter about:profiles in the URL bar to see if it's there.

I did that! I've been copying profiles for 12 years!

Deleting all files in the x-default and copying them over. This is the first time I've been unsuccessful. Tried a few times, actually.

I'll copy them from the source drive again. This is strange

I used the about:profiles and switched to the one I copied over. Strange it didn't work even though I copied it to the other one, which was default

Thank you for the info with about:profiles. Gives me another tool.
