I suddenly have a grey Google bar that has a drop down displaying on opening Firefox and I don't want it. How do I get rid of it?

Grey Google bar is about an inch deep and goes across the screen under my Firefox toolbar. It has a 'sign in' on the right side and a drop down menu on the left that drops open when I start Firefox. I have tried to find a way to get rid of it but it just gives me the opportunity to have Google as my home page, etc. (marketing?) I did not choose this as an 'app' or whatever. It just showed up on my screen after Firefox was closed down for a short time of not using it.

Google changed their menu bar. Firefox hasn't used Google for the default homepage since the Firefox 3.6 versions. Firefox 4+ versions use about:home.
