Also, I also find it extremely annoying that every few weeks it popups a new version of Firefox to install.

Firefox will now, if all goes to plan, update every six weeks. This is the new rapid release schedule, intended to keep firefox up-to-date and secure, along with some improvements.

You are however using the beta channel and so will be one cycle of six weeks ahead of the ordinary releases. That in itself may not be a bad idea, if something is a problem to you on the Beta channel you will always know there is the option to use the even more thoroughly tested standard release channel.

Currently you appear to be using firefox 8 (beta). If you wish to use the standard release (currently firefox 7.0.1) instead download it from for instance: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html

Once you obtain the install file you (I am not certain of exact details on a Mac) you should I think be able to install that on your machine, without needing to uninstall the firefox 8 version. Note do NOT use any options that say something like remove personal settings, because that will result in loss of passwords, bookmarks and other settings.
