Since 6.0 installation, I have no images, want to install 5.x, but my previous version was 3.6.x, don't want to lose all my customizations, thanks.

Win XP home, SP2, no problems with 3.6.x, but now no images (in websites, FB, etc.). Tried updating Adobe Flash and Reader. I was told at 6.0 installation that several of my plug-ins did not have working updates available, but don't even know how to get that list back or what to do about it. Any suggestions? And not sure how to get a version 5 installed without an uninstall and clean install which would make me lose years of customizations. Thanks for any ideas.

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.

  • Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
  • Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
  • Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
  • Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).

If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything on the bullet list, and looked at the extensions and did not find anything that appeared to apply. There were no changes to system or environment except the upgrade to Firefox 6. So I am trying to get to Firefox 5. No changes to firewall or anti-virus settings. Since I don't know what this means, I'll just mention that my extensions list shows that Java Console 6.0.22 and Microsoft Net Framework Assistant 1.2.1 are both disabled because they are incompatible with Firefox 6. And I also tried updating QuickTime because one site told me it could not show its images unless that was done. No luck. I'll try the suggestion on the last line next. Thanks for your time.

You may not recognize the domain that Facebook uses to store images (this is a possible domain: sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net)

You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:

  • Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
  • Go to the Media tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
  • Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
  • If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

Okay, thanks, so I tried this for two sites with no images, including facebook, and nothing shows the blocked image box checked or grayed. (Grayed means mix of blocked and unblocked images, I think). Also tried restarting Firefox in Safe Mode, and I updated my graphics driver (ATI Mobility Radeon, in case that applies). I did update the Java add-on but forgot to get to the Microsoft Net add-on, I'll update that next. Still working on some of the things from that longer link at the end of your first post, too. Thanks for your time and the suggestions, cor-el. I'll keep trying until I get the images back, and will post and let you know what worked. Just so many variables to juggle to figure these things out!
