How do I correct "appcrash" error for Firefox?

more options

After a recent update, closing Firefox generates an error message stating that "Firefox has stopped working" and do I want to "Check online for a solution and close the problem" or "Close the program". Checking either shuts Firefox down. I have searched Firefox "Help" and it seems several others [47] have had the same problem and there have apparently been replies [19] and that the problem has been "solved". OK. How do I get the solution to the problem to solve it? The problem is listed under the "Help" question: "Latest firefox update has stopped working error message everytime I close it". A listing of the error details states the Event Name is

"APPCRASH ".

Hi Lokki17, when I look at that earlier thread (Latest firefox update has stopped working error message everytime I close it), it seems there are several different possible factors involved. In particular, a new incompatibility with:

  • Spybot S&D Immunize feature
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit

Do you have either of those security programs?

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Thank you for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Please note that Firefox is NOT crashing per se. When one clicks on the "X" to turn it off, it does not turn off, but the message I wrote comes up on the screen saying that "Firefox has stopped working". Of course it has stopped working as that's what I just did - turned if off. Clicking on either of the messages quotes will then actually turn it off.

I will now see if I can bring up the "crash" reports as requested.

No Submitted Crash Reports are listed.

So this only occurs when you close Firefox's last window, so Firefox probably is going into its shutdown routine, updating settings files, unloading itself, and BAM, something goes wrong.

This occurs even before the window actually closes? Is there any pattern to what Firefox has been doing recently? For example, are any media players playing at the time? Or if you start up and close Firefox right away without going to too many sites, does it still crash?

This occurs every time I attempt to close Firefox and has been doing so for more than a week ever since Firefox added a new update. There is no pattern. What I am trying to say is that apparently many others are having exactly the same problem and have contacted Mozilla Support about it and by some process have received information that corrected the issue. I am trying to get that same information. I found this out by going to Firefox "Help" and going down a recent list of issues and found one where the question was "Latest firefox update has stopped working error message everytime I close it" with Error Details and subsequent text exactly the same as my issue. I thought by giving that lead the answer would be readily available.

JSCHER2000 You are a genius and I smack my head for not thinking! The issue is Malwarebytes. I had a slightly different problem with Thunderbird about the same time and noted that Mozilla commented that Malwarebytes could be the source. When I ran a experiment by turning Malwarebytes off it solved the Thunderbird problem. Then I excluded Thunderbird from Malwarebites and things are now OK. I did not think about the connection to Firefox. Dumb me! I just did a similar experiment with Firefox and *** It Works! Now Firefox is also excluded from Malwarebytes. Thank You-Thank You!!! P.S. Sorry it took so long to respond this time. Time zones got in the way.

Thank you for reporting back. I hope these compatibility glitches get sorted out soon so that regular updates resolve the issue.
