With Windows 10, Thunderbird (38.4.0) and all previous versions hangs at random times. I have not been able to find one specific thing that causes it to hang. It hangs with a not responding message and recovers after one to two minutes.

It is truly to the point that I have had to switch to Windows Live Mail because of unreliability.

In Windows safe mode TB seems to work okay but I can't leave the machine in that mode too long because it disables too many things.

In TB safe mode the problem, as described above, is still there.

I can confirm that the problem occurs with all anti-virus software disabled.

I will be happy to work with you f to find a solution.

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software, which is most likely the culprit.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.
