Suddenly yesterday afternoon I became unable to download emails to Thunderbird (I can still do it in talktalk). I get a message "Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges and you have enough disc space to copy the mailbox." I have checked there is plenty of disc space. What can I do to get the system working again? I suspect Thunderbird downloaded an update yesterday.

What is your anti-virus software?

more options

Try to start Windows 10 in safe mode with networking enabled.

Does the problem go away?

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.

I have twice restarted in safe made with networking enbled. Both times I was told I can't download emails because I can't access the web in safe mode. So no progress. What else can I try?

You're probably using WiFi, which gets disabled in safe mode.

Then create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile
