Firefox 58.0.2

Hello.

Periodically, when I am on a website, a pop-up is displayed in the top left corner of the page with 'Allow' and' 'Not Now' options so I click on 'Not Now' and it disappears.

1. What is this pop-up called and why is it enabled by default?

2. Where do I go in settings to disable the pop-up from ever being displayed instead of clicking 'Not Now' each time a pop-up is displayed?

  • I checked 'Tools, Page Info, Permissions' and 'Use Default' is checked and 'Always Ask' is selected but greyed out under 'Receive Notifications.'
  • Under 'Options, Privacy, Permissions, Notifications, Settings,' no websites are listed because none were ever added.

I am mixing up the ‘permission panel’ with a pop-up request so I apologize.

1a. For the permission mentioned on the permission panel, clicking ‘Never Allow’ on the permission panel sets that permission immediately and permanently to block that website and clicking ‘Allow’ may set the permission permanently or temporary, depending the specific permission being requested.

b. Does clicking ‘Never Allow’ only sets a specific permission (e.g notifications) to block that website or any permission (e.g. location) would also be blocked from being offered?

C. By clicking ‘Never Allow,’ am I correct that I am only blocking permission from that specific website whereas going into 'Permanent Permission Settings' would be a faster way of doing it since the permission panel will not be displayed.

Whether the change is permanent or temporary depends on the style of the panel. You can compare the earlier screenshots to see the difference. Both Allow and Block would be affected equally.

Each permission panel is for one specific permission and does not affect others. Permissions are site-specific.

What settings are you talking about? If you mean in the Page Info dialog, that is site-specific, as you can see by the server name displayed at the top of the list of permission settings.

Let me reword this last piece of confusion:

1. Since clicking ‘Never Allow’ only blocks one specific permission from that specific website, can ‘all’ types of permissions be blocked permanently by typing about config in the address bar and pressing Enter, typing perm and waiting while the list filters, and seeing a section with all preference names, starting with permissions.default, and their functions ‘or’ do these steps refer to something else?

2. I checked 'Tools, Page Info, Permissions' and 'Use Default' is checked and 'Always Ask' is selected but greyed out under 'Receive Notifications' -Should the setting be changed to 'Block?

3. What is the difference between the 'perm' function (Q1 above) and the 'Block Notifications' setting (Q2 above)?

4. Earlier in the thread, you provided a list of permissions.default and there were six of them-Are those the 'only' permissions or did you just provide the most commonly-requested ones?

@ Buddy2014 :

Please forgive me for butting in, but what happened to what you said yesterday :

"Since the pop-up in question was a one-off on a website I do not usually frequent and since I clicked 'Never,' do I even have to bother with changing the Permission settings and the Notification settings?

"It just seems a lot simpler to click 'Not Now' if and when 'a' pop-up appears, which is rarely anyway. "

I took that as " It's no big deal and I'm letting it go. "

What changed your mind or did I misinterpret  ? (Just curious .... )

These preferences affect Firefox's behavior globally for all sites. If you want to all sites to start out with Block permission for web notifications, you can change that preference here. To make a site-specific exception, you can use the Page Info dialog Permissions panel, but Firefox won't show the Permissions panel because you've changed from "Ask me" to something else.

2. I checked 'Tools, Page Info, Permissions' and 'Use Default' is checked and 'Always Ask' is selected but greyed out under 'Receive Notifications' -Should the setting be changed to 'Block?

When Use Default is checked, the gray circle shows what the default behavior is. You do not need to uncheck Use Default and set a site-specific value unless you want to change Firefox's behavior for that site.

3. What is the difference between the 'perm' function (Q1 above) and the 'Block Notifications' setting (Q2 above)?

Q1: all sites, Q2: current site

4. Earlier in the thread, you provided a list of permissions.default and there were six of them-Are those the 'only' permissions or did you just provide the most commonly-requested ones?

Those are not all of the permissions. For example, I did not list cookie permission or Flash plugin permission because those do not automatically trigger a permission panel, so they weren't relevant to your question. (Those are easy to set through the Options page and Add-ons page, respectively, if you're interested.)

I appreciate all of the information.

1a. Is the 'Use Default' checked and 'Always Ask' selected option considered a site-specific setting?

b. Is the answer to 1a. a site-specific notification setting or a site-specific permission setting?

Since the permission panel display rarely appears and I now know that 'Never Allow' is an option listed under the 'Not Now' drop-box, for my purposes, would you agree:

- Leave 'Use Default' checked and 'Always Ask' selected

-If and when the permission panel appears, click 'Never Allow' and leave the 'perm' function settings and 'site-specific' settings alone?
