That looks like the first few characters of the PDF. My guess the PDF is corrupt in the email. Usual cause is outgoing email attachment scanning in anti virus products.
Thanks for your reply Matt. The weird characters show up in every pdf. While poking around I stumbled on View> Display Attachments Inline and turned that off. Problem solved (I think.....). Not sure why or how it was turned on, why it just started happening and what this all means, but now I think we're back to normal and the Mrs. is happy.
