Version 38.2.0 This is related by my wife...it happens on her computer. We have compacting enabled.

About every week or so, whatever messages that might be in the inbox will become blank. The Subject line will show up in the inbox as if the message is there but when you click on the message, there is no content.
Periodically, it will take Thunderbird 3-4 minutes to boot up.
Only inbox messages seem to be affected.
Twice now, messages have consolidated under one message that is in the inbox. You can tell who the message is from (there may be six or 8 different ones) but the message itself is undecipherable. It shows nothing but what I assume to be code or random letters

Try to rebuild the index file for Inbox. Right-click Inbox - Properties - Repair Folder

Are you accumulating messages in Inbox? Keep Inbox as clean as possible and compact folders on a regular basis. It's recommended to let Thunderbird do that automatically. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

Also, make sure you always do have a recent backup of your Thunderbird profile folder. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Backing_Up_and_Restoring
