I went to about:config and found browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone had 33.1.1 as the reason two startup pages were launching. I clicked modify and removed the 33.1.1 but it still put itself back in. I then saw browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID clicked Modify and cleared the number but it put itself back. This just started happening and now this appears in the address bar: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/33.1.1/whatsnew/?oldversion=23.0.1

Ordinarily this never happens but always starts happening after I update to the newest version.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention in this matter.

Sincerely,

Christopher Frank

hello christopher, this might happen when firefox is not able to properly save preferences in its profile folder. please try this: Click the menu button ≡ and then click help ? > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder". then a new window will open up. in this window look out for a file named user.js (it might be used to overwrite your custom settings). in case it is present , delete or rename this file and restart firefox afterwards.

for more information and other steps please also see: How to fix preferences that won't save

Dear philipp

Thank you for your immediate reply; I followed the steps you suggested and they worked perfectly. Previously I had seen similar suggestions which also said "look out for a file named user.js" but unfortunately I understood it to mean a folder, so when I saw user.js I did not delete it.

Thank you again.
