when I run the Profile Manager only two profiles show up. One is the default and the other is the current one. When I look at the C:\users\[name]\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles directory, there are six profiles listed: mfiles; mko2313h.default; 7wj2zutn.default; mfsigf6g.default; yohktqcx.default; and the current one - hqee0rjq.default. Can I delete all but the current one?

Chosen solution

Firefox shouldn't create a new profile by itself.
If profiles get lost and a new default profile (xxxxxxxxx.default) has been created then it sounds that at that time there was a problem with the profiles.ini file that has caused Firefox to create a new profile.
A reset would create a new default profile with a time stamp appended and manually creating a profile suggests a "Default user" as the name.

You can register (create a new profile and use Choose folder) those profiles to have them show up in the Profile Manager or delete the other profiles manually in AppData\Roaming and in AppData\Local

Thanks for your help. Deleted all but the two that were in the Profile Mgr and everything still works. Even though I have 8G of memory and 1.5Tb of storage capacity, I try to keep my system as lean as possible. Is there a resource that I can access that will explain how and why firefox creates extraneous profiles, or is it a function that occurs with each upgrade?
