Since updating to version 8.0.1 many websites have lost their identity icon.

In the address bar and Bookmarks a lot of web sites have lost their identity icon in Firefox 8.0.1 (which were there before). Holding the cursor over the icon area brings up a message saying 'this site does not supply identity information'. But this message also comes up when putting the cursor over one with an icon. Some sites have the icon in Bookmarks but it doesn't show in the address bar. I have found it does not happen on Vista laptop, only on Windows 7 desktop.

Checking all my bookmarks icons, I found that some are still there AND by revisiting SOME sites, I restored the icon to the bookmark list.

This did not work with all of them but some sites don't have a favicon.ico img on all their pages.

Still some sites that I KNOW had icons before are not showing up.

Hi. I think there are two different things going on here. The "identify information" message relates to something unrelated to the webicon. From what I can tell it has to do with digital signing. I had to do some browsing before I found a site that actually was signed: Google. When you go to Google you'll see the site name to the right of the webicon with the url afterward. Holding cursor over it shows google.com's signed by Thawte Consulting. Oddly enough, VeriSign is not...um...verified. The story on this one will be interesting.

As far as the webicon goes, if you provide links to a few sites that don't work I'd be glad to take a look. I haven't had the problem yet on Lion or Win 7 Pro, but that doesn't mean anything. It could be the way the icon is identified or its filetype: .ico and .png files can be used (maybe others) and there are different ways to identify them: link rel="shortcut icon" or "icon" and type="image/x-icon" or "image/png" if a png file's used. Could be 8.01 no longer recognizes one of these or incorrectly stated ones it was OK with in the earlier release. All guesses of course w/o having something to look into.

Thanks for the information. One site is verified by Verisign. Some of the sites that lost their icons are: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/customize/ and http://www.google.com.au/webhp?hl=en and http://www.creative.com/soundblaster/ and http://www.pinkfloyd.com/ and a lot of others. Most of the ones with icons don't have identity information.

I installed CheckPlaces Add-on which did not restore any favicons and listed all my bookmarks as failed.

Same thing happens to me using win xp home and ff8.01. lost all icons for bookmarks after updating.

Even the Mozilla.com site (which DOES show the firefox icon) has the site has no identifyiers tool tip note.

Link to site that no longer has icon for bookmark == http://my.myway.com/ yet when page source is read, DOES have a faveicon.ico image file.

Since it's so widespread my guess it's older sites that haven't implemented new html standards and/or ff8.01 expects icon info to be in a certain place that is different from old standard and doesn't also check the old location. ??

I'm only guessing here of course as I am not very familiar with website html nor browser logic.

Since I had icons with ff3.6 and now not with ff8.01 I think we can safely assume that the update made some difference in how the page info is decoded.
