FF 8 stops downloading after 15 minutes when not actively surfing in the net at same time. What can I do?

Everything works fine except when downloading bigger data packages. In itself not a problem, but when I leave the computer on its own, the downloads stop after a short time. FF8 and the internet connection are still working. Never had this problem with the prior versions. Please help. I really don't like to spend hours in front of the computer, clicking every few minutes on a internet page just so the downloads are not interrupted.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"
