Pixel-scrolling sporadically reboots the computer (no BSOD). I can trigger it in 1 to 3 minutes (sometimes ~10) but sometimes at first attempt.

There's many things that uses pixel-scrolling (mainly it's "Use autoscrolling"), but it only happens if there's some pictures on the site (a google result only showing text is no problem).

Other Pixel-scroll triggers:

Option "Use smooth scrolling", happened during scroll despite "Use autoscrolling" disabled.

Website "scroll-to-buttons". Happened with both options off. IE "See how it works"-buttons at http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikeplus/en_EMEA/what_is_nike_plus

Websites with soft-stop scroll-borders. :S

Tried: 1. Windows reinstall and FFox with no add-ons/plug-ins.. didn't help.

2. To compare I have for a week now only used IExplorer.. no crashes.

FireFox 4.0.1 XPpro sp3

I've been trying to replicate your problem, but autoscroll works correctly on my system.

Try installing this add-on ( I use it myself) and see if it makes any difference: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/smoothwheel/

I tried a smooth-addon for investigation before (that used to work when FFox was normal).

And just like yours it too just acted as a trigger (as suspected). It doesn't fix the underlying problem, wherever that is (fresh win+FFox).

IE8 works but has other annoyances.. So I still use a cut down optioned FFox.. but cautiously and rebootingly ;) (some can't be avoided as explained).

Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

I did extensive safe mode scrolling (1+ hour) and it works.. BUT..

In normal mode: (Disabling didn't help) I un-installed programs to remove all add-ons and plug-ins (the windows auto-installed stuff took some googling to remove) (both lists empty) but it still bugged.

So it's not the add-ons or plug-ins unless I missed something but both lists and the config:plugins page is empty.

So..

EDIT: Just adding, the bug can take ~10 minutes to trigger but most often it's ~3 min, BUT sometimes directly.

In Firefox 4 Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Well.. only disabling hardware acceleration in normal mode worked (scrolled ~30 minutes), but.. installing newest card drivers didn't remove the problem.

Scrolling in the firefox "get add-ons" window is slow with it off, but I haven't noticed any difference in regular browsing/video displaying/web-games.. yet. (I got 7600gt).

Maybe I can use this maybe not.. Thanks anyway, but I'm wondering a bit what brought it up now, and if it will/can be fixed, (doesn't really seem to be my fault).

(though I don't remember if I had hw-acc enabled in 3.x).
