The Restoring Bookmarks routine said places.sqlite is an unsupported file

I have a new laptop. I have the hard disk from my previous machine which I can read from the new one. I followed the instructions in the help pages to Restore Bookmarks, navigating to places.sqlite. The wizard said that file was unsupported, so I couldn't get any further.

Alternatively, can I just manually copy the old places.sqlite into the new places.sqlite?

I must have the latest or near-latest version of Firefox, downloaded early Sept 2010.

The restore bookmarks option is looking for a JSON file. As you have the places.sqlite file you can copy that file into your current profile folder, replacing the one that is already there.

Tony, a fantastic result, thanks very much. I now have access again to my 25 MB of lifetime bookmarks!

I would suggest that a developer makes this into a routine via the Bookmarks menu.
