Hello Michael.
Does this happen on every single picture in the web? You can do a very quit test right now by rightclicking the small blue picture at the top of this page, next to the title (where it says "Firefox will not automatically open .jpeg(s) or .gif(s)...") and middle click "view image" (that will open the image in a new tab). Tell me whether that image in particular opens in Firefox, please.

yes i also have exactly the same issue
have set default to open the image in picasa but opens any image immediately in the firefox view page
I want Firefox to open JPEG files with Windows Picture and Fax viewer.
